Just before 5:30 Tuesday morning, Topeka Police officers responded to a report of a train hitting a man on the rail road tracks approximately half mile north of the Sardou bridge on the west side of the river.

During the initial investigation, it appears the man sat motionless on the track as the trained approached, making no attempt to move. The engineer of the train did activate emergency braking, but there was no way for the train to avoid the man sitting on the track. Police aren’t releasing the name of the man until his family is notified. Police did say the victim is a while male and about 54 years old

Police will continue to investigate this incident and asks the help of anyone who may have knowledge to call with any information. Call detectives at 368-9400 or Crime Stoppers at 234-0007.
